About

Mark Deakin is a Chichester based jazz guitarist with a bachelor’s degree in music. After many years focusing on a wide range of styles, it was through the approaches of Hal Galper, Barry Harris and Mike Longo that he developed a way of playing and teaching jazz that harnesses the wisdom of the greats.

He plays live as part of the duo “Ornithology” with bassist/pianist Leo McCulloch. Inspired by a shared love of jazz greats such as Charlie Parker and Bud Powell, their name is taken from the Parker tune, which references his nickname, Bird. Their sound is guided by a certain ‘warmth’ found in the classic jazz of the 40s and 50s. Their arrangements of jazz standards showcase Mark’s virtuosic guitar playing while honouring the warmth and character of the songs.
